An associate of arts degree is a two-year undergraduate degree in the fields of liberal arts and sciences.
Time
In order to obtain an associate of arts degree a student at a college or community college must complete at least 60 credit hours of course work. This normally works out to around two academic school years.
Requirements
Students must take general education requirement classes, major related course work, and electives---classes that are not a required part of the coursework for a specific degree.
Liberal Arts
A student who has acquired an associate of arts degree in the area of liberal arts usually receives a degree relevant to work in fields such as marketing, education, interpreters and journalism.
Sciences
The associate of arts degree can also be relevant to various sciences, including psychology, sociology and agriculture.
Purpose
Associate of arts degrees are used by many people to gain employment in a specialized field quickly. If they choose, they can continue their educations and complete bachelor's degrees.
