  • Hair loss of a puppy is a concern for dog owners. In most puppies it is typical for hair loss to occur. The puppies that are more susceptible to hair loss are female dogs, certain breeds of dogs, and dogs who have undergone surgery.

    Age

Puppy hair loss is very common. Usually puppies lose their first coat of hair between the ages of three and 10 months old. Also, when puppies become adults they usually shed hair a couple times a year.

    Allergies

One factor that can cause puppy hair loss is allergies. Allergies in dogs can be caused by the food they're eating. Food allergies usually occur with puppies that are trying new foods. Also, environmental allergies can take a toll on a puppy, such as pollen, trees, weeds and dust.

    Illnesses & Stress

A big factor of puppy hair loss is stress. If a puppy is put in a stressful environment, it can lose its hair. Diseases that cause hair loss in puppies are ringworm, hypothyroidism, yeast infections and mange.

    Breeds

Hair loss in puppies can be more common in some breeds than in others. For example, Pomeranian dogs face hair loss more often than other dogs.

    Prevention

In order to prevent puppy hair loss you can do a couple of essential things. Feed your dog nutritious food that is rich in nutrients for dogs, rather than human food. Make sure your dog does not have allergic reactions to the food. Brush your dog's hair daily. This thickens the dog's hair, and your dog will be less likely to get mange.
