It's possible to get food poisoning from imported food, locally produced food and food from your own backyard. But, since all food, domestic or imported, is subject to inspection by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), there's no reason to think that a can of clams from Thailand would be any more dangerous than a can of clams from Maine or, for that matter, a dozen eggs from your local dairy.

On the Other: Nobody Is Perfect

Of course, the FDA can't inspect every can of clams before it goes on grocery shelves. Any food you eat could cause a bout of food poisoning, no matter where it came from. It's a risk you take every time you sit down to eat, though most people don't give it a great deal of thought.

    Bottom Line

Thailand is the world's largest exporter of seafood, and takes its reputation seriously. With all the Thai seafood being sold around the world, it would be obvious by now if the food were not at least as safe as any other seafood. While no system of inspections is perfect, there's no reason to think clams from Thailand are any less safe than anything else on your grocer's shelf.
