  • A registered nurse is a healthcare professional who helps the sick, injured or disabled. There are certain skills, knowledge and personal qualities that are necessary for an individual to be a good registered nurse.

    Good Judgement

Nurses must have good judgment. When caring for a patient, a nurse must be able to make good decisions and take potential actions that will benefit the patient's health. They must also be sensitive to problems and have the ability to tell if something is likely to go wrong. Being able to recognize problems and give preventive care is essential.

    Customer Service

Customer and personal service is very important in the profession. A nurse must work effectively with her patients and offer quality care. Nursing is a service-oriented career. Nurses must actively look for ways to try and help people. The Minnesota School of Business recommends that nurses have a strong ethical base. The school also states that nurses should have natural compassion for their patients.

    Mental Stability

Mental stability is also very important in the nursing profession. Nurses need the emotional strength to cope with human suffering, stress, and emergencies.

    Hygiene

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, nurses must also be willing to work in potentially hazardous conditions. There are situations where nurses may come into contact with individuals who have infectious diseases. They may also be exposed to potentially toxic or harmful medications or other compounds. For this reason, a nurse would do well to have a high standard of personal hygiene.

    Education

Nurses must also have a zest for learning. According to the University of Missouri, nurses are required to maintain a license in the state in which they work. Periodically, licenses must be renewed, and some states require continuing education courses in order for renewal.
