  • Rough idling and loss of power are symptoms and signs of bad spark plugs or spark plug wires.Troubleshooting spark plug wires is fairly simple and should be done before you look elsewhere for the source of this problem. A good pair of insulated spark plug pliers or a good set of needle nose pliers is all that's required for this troubleshooting.

    Beginning Troubleshooting

Perform this task only if your engine is running rough or you're experiencing a loss of engine power. Start your engine and let it idle. Open the hood and locate all your spark plug wires. Use insulated spark plug wire pliers or needle nose pliers to perform this task.

    Troubleshooting the Wiring

Troubleshoot one wire at a time. Pull a spark plug wire off the spark plug probe about an inch. If you feel the engine seem to misfire at this time, that is a clear indication that the wire is good and no replacement is needed. You will know the spark plug wire is no good if the engine does not respond to a rough idle or misfire when the spark plug wire is off. In that case, the wire will need to be replaced.

    Follow Through

Continue troubleshooting one spark plug wire at a time. Replace each wire after it has been tested. Troubleshooting can also be done at the distributor cap using the same procedure of pulling one wire at a time.
