DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) is found in almost each cell of the human body. It contains all the genetic information the body needs to function and grow. A DNA test can even be conducted on a years-old sample.
Significance
DNA tests are usually done on samples of saliva, blood, hair, semen, or skin. They can be used to determine a person's identity, parents, and susceptibility to genetic diseases.
Parental
A parental DNA test is used to determine if one person is the biological offspring of another. It the most advanced and accurate method of determining parentage.
Forensic
DNA samples are collected from crime scenes and tested to determine the identity of the person to whom the sample belongs. The results can be used to place a person at the scene of crime or exonerate the wrongly accused.
Legal
In the United Sates, all DNA tests presented in court must be done by a laboratory accredited by the American Association of Blood Banks.
Other Uses
DNA tests may also be used to determine ancestry, determine the identity of endangered animal species, determine the pedigree of animals, detect bacteria, and match donors for organ transplantation.
