Car insurance laws vary by the state. However, no matter where you live, you will probably be required to have car insurance on your car. Not only do you need to get car insurance, you need to maintain your insurance coverage.

Most states issue fines to uninsured drivers. Fines vary by state. They may start out at $100 or $1,000 and can go up from there for repeat offenses.
Loss of License
You may lose your driver's license for up to a year if you are caught driving without insurance. There are fees to get your license back.
Jail
You may face jail time for up to five years for driving while uninsured.
Financial Responsibility
If you caused damages to another car, bodily injury, pain and suffering and/or loss of wages, you may be financially responsible, requiring you to pay out of your own pocket.
Impound
Depending on which state you live, your vehicle tag can be taken and your car impounded.
