Materials
Blood pressure cuffs consist of an inner rubber layer and an outer nylon layer with a fastener.
Placement
A blood pressure cuff wraps around the arm, wrist, or finger, then inflates to squeeze the arm, according to the Mayo Clinic.
Manual Operation
The cuff on a manual blood pressure monitor includes a bulb that pumps air into the cuff. A stethoscope allows you to listen for blood movement and heart rate to measure your blood pressure.
Digital Operation
The cuff on a digital blood pressure monitor inflates and deflates automatically as a digital gauge measures your blood pressure and displays the results.
Considerations
Proper fitting of the cuff makes a big difference in the accuracy of the blood pressure reading. The Kmom website notes that larger people may need a different size cuff than usual. Finger and wrist cuffs tend to give less accurate readings than arm cuffs, as do public blood pressure monitors.
