Drivers convicted of certain violations may need an SR-22 filing to reinstate or maintain their driving privileges. Although the SR-22 filing process seems confusing, it is fairly simple. An SR-22 is simply a certification your insurance company files with your state's motor vehicle division. It states that you have purchased the auto insurance coverage required by your state. You start the SR-22 filing process by purchasing an auto insurance policy that meets your state's requirements. You must advise the insurance company that you need an SR-22 filing. Some insurance companies require you to pay an additional fee for the SR-22 filing. As long as you do not let your policy lapse, this is typically a one-time fee. Once you have paid your insurance premium and SR-22 filing fee, your insurance company will prepare and submit your SR-22 filing to the motor vehicle division. Some states use electronic filing, so your SR-22 will be processed the same day. Other states use manual filings, so your SR-22 may not be processed for a week or more. What Is an SR-22?
