  • More and more students are applying to college. The requirements to get into college may vary, but there are some general guidelines to follow that will maximize your chances of receiving an acceptance letter.

    Considerations

In 2006, over 2 million U.S. high school students applied to at least one college, reports MSNBC. Marlyn McGrath Lewis, director of admissions for Harvard College in Cambridge, says most colleges have no qualifications that will grant you automatic admission to a college, reports College View.

    Research

It's best to do as much research on the school you are applying to as possible. This way you will know what they are seeking, their history and how to match your skills with what they are looking for when filling out the admissions forms.

    Needed

The typical college requires taking a standardized entrance exam, either the SAT or ACT; the grades from the classes you took in high school; and a personal statement, reports CollegeView.

    Activities

Better grades will help get you into a college, but even placing first in your class may not qualify you for admission, reports WRAL News. Colleges want to see extracurricular activities that show you are a model student and seriously interested in learning and helping society as a whole. Extracurricular activities also demonstrate that you have good time management skills.

    Early Planning

CollegeView recommends students start thinking about college early in high school. By the time you are ready to apply to a college, it may be too late to overcome a poor grade point average, even with an excellent SAT or ACT score.
