  • An intrauterine device (IUD) is one of the most popular methods of preventing unwanted pregnancies. There are numerous types, though, and some women may not be able to use an IUD due to their particular health risks or body type.

    Intrauterine Device

An IUD is T-shaped, relatively small, and made of plastic. It's inserted into a woman's uterus during a regular office visit.

    Function

The intrauterine device stops semen from joining with the egg by changing the lining of the uterus, making it much more hostile to sperm and stopping their progress.

    Advantages

An IUD can be easily inserted and removed. It begins working immediately, can last for up to 10 years, and it doesn't interfere with sexual intercourse.

    Disadvantages

The initial insertion of an IUD may cause some aches and pains. Also, it doesn't protect against sexually transmitted diseases. And some women may have an allergic reaction to the copper IUD.

    Types

The two types of IUD are copper, which lasts for 10 years, and the hormonal variant, which lasts for five years. The copper IUD gives off copper particles to prevent unwanted pregnancy, whereas the hormonal IUD releases the hormone progestin into the woman's system.
