Oftentimes considered the cradle of civilization, Mesopotamia is the birthplace of divorce.

The first written directives about divorce are found in the Code of Hammurabi in Babylonia.
Greek Culture
At the height of the ancient Greek city-states, divorce widely was accepted and practiced.
Roman Empire
The practice of divorce extended around the known world through the conquests of the Roman Empire. Nonetheless, the practice was not as acceptable as the case earlier in Greece.
Misconceptions
One common misconception is that divorce is a practice or ritual of fairly recent origin.
