  • Police academies are the law enforcement equivalent of military boot camp. Officer recruits are tested mentally and physically while learning the basics of policing.

    Physical Fitness

The recruits exercise vigorously in order to get in better shape. The daily exercise also tests their determination to become officers while getting them accustomed to working under physical stress.

    Rules and Regulations

Rules and regulations are taught so recruits know how they are expected to behave, how their uniforms are to be worn and even how they are expected to groom themselves.

    First Responder Training

Officers are often the first to respond to medical situations, so they are given first responder training while in the academy. In New Jersey, first responder certification falls between first aid and basic emergency medical technician.

    Criminal and Motor Vehicle Codes

Police officers need to know their state's criminal and motor vehicle laws. The police academy is where they start to learn these laws.

    Self-Defense & Compliance Techniques

Recruits are taught how to effectively defend themselves and others against physical attacks. Sometimes people resist arrest, and recruits are taught how to gain compliance through the use of certain techniques such as joint manipulation.

    Firearms Training

Firearms' training is often the most fun and the most stressful part of the police academy. You not only have to learn how to handle and properly clean your firearms, but you must also learn how to properly use them, and must shoot a minimum qualification score to graduate from the academy.
