  • Since the end of World War II, Florida has been attracting new residents in droves, and for good reasons. From Daytona Beach to Coral Gables, from the rhythms and sounds of Little Havana to the first day of spring training in Pensacola, the state is a patchwork quilt of transplanted cultures, quirky ideals and plenty of sunshine. There are however, costs involved if you decide to move to Florida.

    Cost of Living

Living in Florida can be costly. It is the 15th most expensive state and ranks only 21st overall in per-capita income at $39,267, just below the national average. Unless you are moving from someplace like Manhattan or San Francisco, you will likely see a slight decrease in your discretionary income. This partly depends on where in Florida you relocate. Of the major metropolitan areas, Miami is the most expensive, followed by Orlando, Tampa and Jacksonville. The average cost of a one bedroom apartment in those cities is about $650 a month and the average salary is about $40,000.

    Saving for a Rainy Day

Another factor to consider is the job market. Florida was hit hard by the housing bust and recession. As of December 2009, it still had unemployment above the national average, at 11.2 percent. If you are in a relatively recession proof industry, such as health care, your job prospects should be fine. If not, your best bet is to have enough in cash reserves to get through the first three months, if you don't have a job lined up. Rent, food and other miscellaneous expenses will add up quickly.

    Moving Expenses

Your total cost for the move, including savings, move-in costs (first and last month's rent plus security deposit) and travel expenses will likely run between $4,500 and $5,000. Depending on where you're coming from, that might sound like a lot, but it's a small price to pay for a new way of life.
