An Exchange mail server is generally viewed as a much safer and more secure way to communicate online.
Features
The email databases of a company are handled locally by an Exchange mail server, so all information is stored locally instead of at a remote location. In this way, only the company has access to its own communication records. Exchange Server also features multiple ways of protecting email users from spam. Additionally, it provides anti-virus features to protect a company's email users.
Benefits
A major benefit to having an Exchange server installed in a corporate environment is that it is not reliant on the Internet for access to a company email database. This means that even if a remote Internet site goes down, mail can still be accessed and written locally.
Considerations
Running a mail server such as Microsoft Exchange Server locally requires more maintenance and is much more costly than using free online services.

There have been many editions of Exchange Server. The most recent edition is Exchange Server 2010.
