  • According to the National Psoriasis Foundation, at least half of all the people with psoriasis have it on their scalps. Scalp psoriasis can vary in severity, but there are treatments available to keep scaling and flaking to a minimum.

    Shampoos

Shampoos containing tar or salicylic acid can help dissolve flakes so they are easier to lift from the scalp. Shampoos work best on mild psoriasis and can be purchased over-the-counter.

    Topical and Oral Medications

Cases of moderate and severe scalp psoriasis are treated with topical and oral medications. Gently remove scales with a comb before applying topical medications. Test them on a small area to check for side effects, such as hair loss, before applying to the entire scalp.

    Injections

Sometimes doctors inject mild scalp scales with steroids to suppress the immune response. Steroid injections are not given frequently because the medication can be absorbed through the scalp and cause unpleasant side effects.

    Ultraviolet Light

Ultraviolet (UV) light can help clear scalp psoriasis. For patients with thick hair that blocks sunlight, UV combs that transmit light to the scalp can help.

    Concealment

Patients can help conceal scalp psoriasis while undergoing treatment. Hairstylists can help with haircuts that minimize the appearance of scales. Wearing light-colored shirts makes flaking less noticeable as well.
