  • If you're the type of person who has a difficult time directing a conversation, sometimes a phone conversation can make you feel obligated to keep listening even if you have other pressing issues or simply want to get off the phone. Some people resort to being rude by abruptly interrupting with an aggressive, "I've got to go." This is an effective way to end the phone conversation but it can cost you a friendship. Graceful, authentic honesty is the best way.

    Be Positive

Be positive with the person on the line. Whether he is a friend, family member or a sales person, being positive can close the conversation quickly with ease and grace. Give a positive statement before making the negative statement such as, "I would love to hear more about this, but I have to go tend to my baby. ..." Including the positive statement will affirm to the individual that he is important and you in fact do want to hear what he is saying, but at another time. End the conversation with another positive, assuring statement such as, "it was nice talking with you."

    Avoid Dishonesty

Do not use a dishonest statement such as, "I've got another call on the other line," when in fact you just want to get off the phone. Lying can cause hurt if the other person figures out you were being dishonest. Don't be afraid to be honest.

    Watch Your Vocal Tone

Watch your vocal tone to not send mixed messages. Although the person on the other line can't see your body language, he can still pick up on nonverbal cues such as vocal tone and volume. Don't say one thing and mean something else. For example, you can say, "it was nice talking to you," but if it's said with aggression in your voice, the person may interpret it as sarcasm and not genuine appreciation.
