  • Drinking is a deeply embedded social activity and way of life in the U.S. Approximately half of the people in the U.S. partake in drinking on a regular basis. How much drinking does it take to damage your liver?

    Function of the Liver

The liver converts alcohol and other things we consume into a form that the body can use or eliminate. Excessive drinking interferes with this process. It takes one hour for the liver to break down one drink.

Drinking and Damage to the Liver

Heavy drinking after 10 to 15 years causes cirrhosis. Exact amounts vary from person to person. Most alcoholics report drinking 10 or more drinks daily.

    Cirrhosis of the Liver

Cirrhosis is a potentially fatal disease. The liver becomes hard and enlarged. The damage done from abusing alcohol is irreversible.

    More Effects

Not all excessive drinkers develop cirrhosis. But most people who drink too much will suffer some liver damage. A person who has three to four drinks daily risks liver damage over time.

    Prevention/Solution

Moderate drinking will usually not lead to cirrhosis or other alcohol-related liver diseases. The general rule of thumb is: no more than one daily drink for women, and two for men.
