<h4 class="dechead">On One Hand: Hydroponics Works
Growing plants hydroponically in greenhouses, in nutrient solutions without soil, is very productive, conserves water and land and protects the environment, according to Merle H. Jensen, Department of Plant Sciences at the University of Arizona.
On the Other: Hydroponic Greenhouses are Expensive
Not only are the greenhouses themselves expensive, trying to control the environment is expensive. A great deal of energy, such as natural gas, propane, fuel oil or electricity is needed to grow plants without soil. High intensity lamps, used to grow plants hydroponically, are expensive too.
Bottom Line
If properly cared for, most plants will produce high yields when grown hydroponically and will result in a good product. However, if the system is not maintained properly, the attempt could fail, adding to the already pricey nature of the venture.
