Car insurance is important as it helps protect you wallet and your health from car accidents. One of the confusing parts about car insurance is the SR22 form. Not many people know when, why or how they have to get these forms, or what they mean.
What is an SR22?
An SR22 is a form that the insurance company will file to make sure you are maintaining auto insurance on your car for up to three years.
Needed
An SR22 is necessary if you have broken the law while driving, including damaging other vehicles recklessly, license suspensions, no insurance in the past and no insurance during an accident.
Obtaining
Obtaining an SR22 is as simple as asking your car insurance to issue you one. They will do the rest of the work with the DMV and mail you the form. They are usually fairly inexpensive, costing little more than $15 to $20, but this depends on your insurance firm.
Consequences
Not paying your insurance premium while having an SR22 will cancel your insurance immediately. SR22's also raise your premium. They also indicate to police that you are a potentially high risk driver.
Where
Delaware, Kentucky, Minnesota, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Pennsylvania do not require SR22's but you must keep up with your SR22 requirements in the state you obtained it. New York and North Carolina has no SR22's or requirements to maintain.
