When you buy a high definition (HD) TV, which has twice the resolution as a standard television set, your initial setup requires preparation.
Free Programming
Local television stations often provide free HD programming "over the air." To receive these broadcasts, your set needs a built-in HD tuner or a set-top tuner purchased separately.
Paid Programming
Pay HD channels, such as HBO, require a cable or satellite subscription. Along with the subscription, the service providers give you a set-top box that connects to the HDTV and receives the HD signal.
DVDs and Games
DVD players and video game consoles connect to HD sets through AV, S-video, component or HDMI cables. HDMI cables---if your equipment supports them---provide the best audio and video quality on an HDTV.
Resolution
HD televisions feature video lines of resolution between 720p (1280 pixels wide by 720 pixels high) up to 1080p (1920 wide by 1080 high). The "P" means a progressive frame rate, which provides the highest quality picture.
Audio
Besides built-in speakers, most HDTVs have outlets for a stereo or digital audio receiver. Most audio devices include sufficient cables for connection.
