<h4 class="dechead">On One Hand: Mucinex works
Mucinex is approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to fight congestion by loosening and thinning out mucus. It also relieves chest congestion, allowing you to cough more productively.
On the Other: It is not for Chronic Problems
If you have a persistent or chronic cough from smoking, asthma, chronic bronchitis or emphysema, Mucinex may not be right for you. Ask your doctor about using Mucinex if you have those conditions.
Bottom Line
Mucinex not only works immediately after taking it, it also has a time-release formula so that one dose lasts for 12 hours. Its active ingredient is guaifenesin, an expectorant. Mucinex is only for adults and children 12 years of age and older. Children younger than 12 should not take Mucinex.
