Probiotics, which means "for life," refers to friendly bacteria that can have health benefits for the body and which aid in fighting harmful bacteria. There are many different types of probiotics, with different strains having a variety of uses.
History
Russian scientist and Nobel Prize recipient Ilya Metchnikoff was the first to note the positive role this bacteria could play in the body, although the term "probiotics" was not coined until 1953.
Digestion
Probiotics are commonly known for their aid in digestion, including treating diarrhea, fighting irritable bowel syndrome and improving colitis. Managing lactose intolerance is another common use for probiotics.
Cardiovascular
Recent research has shown some benefits from probiotics in lowering cholesterol and blood pressure, along with preventing heart disease.
Cancer
According to a report by the World Health Organization, some evidence shows that probiotics may play a role in preventing certain types of cancer.
Prevention
Probiotics are useful for many types of ailments. But they are also recommended to healthy individuals for their ability to keep the bacteria inside the body balanced and help in the prevention of certain diseases.
Supplements
Probiotics can be found in certain dairy products, including yogurts and soy milk. Supplements with probiotics included in them are also available in capsules, powder or tablets.
