Heat that is given off by one source used to heat another object that is not connected to the original source is radiant heat. Radiant heat is also called infrared radiation.
Heating Transfer
Heat doesn't just rise, it expands in all directions. In the case of radiant heat, the energy transfers through the air from one source to another.
Sun
The sun also uses the principal of radiant heating to heat the earth. When the earth is heated by the sun a part of the way that this process is carried out is by the heat being absorbed into the earth's surface.
People
Human beings constantly transfer radiant heat to other objects. Our bodies have been designed to get rid of heat. This is one of the reasons why in a crowded area with lots of people the temperature tends to be warm or even hot.
Examples
Another way to experience radiant heat is by examining it at night with the aid of night vision goggles or by understanding how a television remote works. Night goggles uses the weak infrared energy as a part of the process of being able to see in the dark and a TV remote uses an infrared beam to activate an electronic signal to turn the channels or control the volume.
Alternative Heating
Radiant heating is used as a form of alternative heating. Radiant floors, panels, and even some buildings are heated with this process.
