  • Advanced cirrhosis of the liver can result in the need for a liver transplant or other invasive operations such as surgery to relieve pressure on veins by placing stents , or surgery to control the buildup of excess fluid.

    Definition

Cirrhosis refers to the development of scar tissue on the liver.

    Significance

The liver purifies blood and removes toxins from the body. Cirrhosis interferes with these processes.

    Healing Properties of the Liver

The liver is the only organ that can regenerate itself. It has remarkable healing properties, but each time it heals, scar tissue develops over the site of the repair. While minor cirrhosis is recoverable, the more scar tissue you have, the more difficult it is for your liver to function.

    Causes

Common causes of chirrhodis include hronic alcohol abuse, hepatitis, cystic fibrosis, some immune disorders and excess buildup of fat or iron. Poorly formed or hardened bile ducts can cause cirrhosis. So can some parasites or an inability for your body to properly store glycogen.

    Complications

Complications if cirrhosis include a higher risk of liver cancer, hypertension, malnutrition, a buildup of toxins, and reduced resistance to infection.

    Prevention

You can reduce your risk of cirrhosis by maintaining a healthy lifestyle, avoiding frequent alcohol use, being careful about chemical use, and avoiding unprotected sex or sharing needles.
