Although relatively unknown as a supplement 10 years ago, DMAE was an overnight sensation when Dr. Nicholas Perricone introduced it to youth seekers in his book "The Wrinkle Cure." A controlled study administered by Johnson & Johnson proved that DMAE helps lift and tighten skin when applied topically. DMAE works by increasing levels of a neurotransmitter called acetylcholine, which is necessary for nerves to communicate with muscles, keeping them taut.

On the Other: Less Impressive for Memory

Although DMAE clearly enhances the appearance of skin, the jury is still out on whether it improves short-term memory, which was its original application. As is the case with other supplements, one person may respond positively, while another person may receive little to no benefit at all.

    Bottom Line

Along with Omega-3 fatty acids, DMAE is the reason that wild-caught salmon is a popular anti-aging food. In addition to eating salmon, Dr. Perricone recommends using both a topical preparation of DMAE and a daily supplement of 50 to 100 mg.
