<h4 class="dechead">On One Hand: Safe Nutrition
The article "Nausea/Morning Sickness" on the Gentlebirth.org website recommends drinking protein shakes while you are pregnant as a safe and reliable source of nutrition. Drinking a protein drink may help relieve morning sickness. Have one as a snack between meals to prevent a dive in blood sugar.
On the Other: Other Nutritional Needs
M.J. Hanafin, a certified nurse midwife and nurse practitioner claims protein drinks are unsafe during pregnancy and advises that "you need a lot of calories, protein, and fat in your diet for the baby to grow." Not supplying other nutritional needs can harm you and your baby.
Bottom Line
Studies continue, however consider what the Natural Factors website says about one of its meal replacement products: "Although SlimStyles with PGX is very safe, it is advisable for pregnant women to check with their health care practitioner prior to use. It is also highly inadvisable for a woman to go on a weight loss program unless directed by her health care practitioner while pregnant."
