A family tree, or pedigree, shows relationships between people or animals. Forms of family trees are used by scientists, animal breeders, and genealogists tracking and studying the histories of families over generations.
Types
Family trees or pedigree charts represent families in different ways---vertical or horizontal, triangular, circular or represented as a tree, with ancestors as branches and descendants as the roots.
Function
Breeders and researchers use charts to keep track of data, in a format that presents the needed information at a glance.
Scientists
Scientists use family trees to show taxonomy---a classification of the relationship between animals based on their genus and species.
Breeders
Breeders use family trees to track the lineage of animals they are breeding---to determine, for example, a dog's pedigree or a horse's bloodline.
Genealogists
Genealogists use a family tree to show how members of a family are related. The family tree gives the names of parents, grandparents and other direct-line ancestors by generation. The chart may also list information such as birth, marriage, and death locations and dates.
