Dr. Trisha Macnair of BBC Health says that women may safely use birth control pills until menopause. Dr. Catherine Lynch of the University of South Florida College of Medicine in Tampa adds that the use of birth control pills may even alleviate some menopause symptoms.

On the Other: Long-Term Use Is Not Safe for Everyone

Dr. Macnair cautions that the risk of certain cancers, such as those of the breast and cervix, may be greater among long-term birth control pill users. Stroke risk also increases with long-term birth control pill use, especially among smokers.

    Bottom Line

If you are in good health, have no risk factors for cancer or stroke, and do not smoke, it can be safe to use the birth control pill until menopause. You should visit your doctor once a year for a checkup and Pap smear to monitor your health while you take the pill.
