  • Alma, Georgia is considered to be the birthplace of the blueberry industry and is host to the annual Georgia Blueberry Festival, held the first weekend in June. But where can you go any day of the year to find blueberry bushes in Alma? Whether you want to visit a direct-sales blueberry farm, pick your own berries or purchase a blueberry bush for planting, Alma has it all.

    Visit a Blueberry Farm

The first blueberry cooperative was formed in Alma, Georgia in 1970. Today, more than 200 growers and more than a dozen packing plants in the state export the fruit to markets throughout the United States, Canada and Japan. In order to protect the integrity of Georgia blueberry varieties, direct-sales growers must be licensed by the Georgia Seed Development Commission (GSDC). The GSDC list of Blueberry Licensees enables you to view grower information including how to contact them before you visit, and just what type(s) of blueberries each grower is licensed to produce.

    Pick your Own Blueberries

Blueberry picking is a pastime enjoyed by young and old throughout Georgia. Although you can find blueberries by chance growing wild along the roadside or in the woods, the most guaranteed way to have a good time and go home with plenty of blueberries is to visit a "pick-your-own" farm. Although many farms in Alma are direct-sale growers, you can also find pick-your-own farm locations in Alma-Bacon county and the surrounding area. Ramshackle Hollow Farm is a grower that allows people to pick---and sample---their certified organic blueberries. But you'll need to bring your own buckets and plan ahead. It's by appointment only. Ramshackle Hollow Farm 157 Paper Trace Lane Nicholls, GA 31554 912-632-4816 Open: May, June, July Hours: By appointment only

    Find a Blueberry Nursery

If picking blueberries in Alma just isn't enough, or if you are looking for the perfect gift from Georgia's blueberry capital, you'll want to visit one of the area's many nurseries to select your own blueberry bush. Southeast Bark and Blueberry Farms, located in Alma, allows growers to choose from a selection of blueberry varieties including Rabbit Eye, Brightwell, Premier, Powder Blue and Climax.
