A bird flower, otherwise known as the bird of paradise flower or crane flower, is native to South Africa. It derives its name from the fact that it looks like a bird with bright plumage and colors.
Classification
The bird flower is part of the Strelitziaceae family and the Strelitzia genus. The species is reginea which means Of The Queen. It is also closely related to the banana plant.
Color
The bird flower blooms in orange and blue and the foliage looks like a bird in flight. The leaves are thick, smooth and dark green, but there is no trunk.
Care
This is an ornamental plant that can bloom in later winter to early, mid and late spring and early summer. The bird flower will grow in full sun to partial shade and only needs moderate watering.
Size
The bird flower can grow to a height of 4 to 6 feet tall and 36 to 48 inches wide.
Symbolism
The bird flower represents joyfulness and paradise, due to its distinct and unique shape and striking beauty. They are also the flower associated with the ninth wedding anniversary.
