Ferdinand Magellan was born in Portugal in 1480. He sailed under his native country's flag for 12 years before he took his services to Spain. It is his one major voyage for Spain for which Magellan is well known.
1505
Under the Portuguese flag, Magellan's first voyage at sea was in 1505. This voyage also gave Magellan his first combat experience when he fought in a conflict to install Fernando de Almeida as the Portuguese Viceroy in India.
1506
Still under the Portuguese flag in 1506, Magellan joined voyages to the East Indies for expeditions to the Spice Islands.
1510
Magellan made captain in the Portuguese navy, but later lost his commission when he sailed a ship eastward without permission.
1513
Under the Portuguese flag, Magellan was sent to Morocco in 1513. There he fought in the Battle of Azamor. Magellan received a severe wound to the knee. Afterward, Magellan took leave without permission which cost him the favor of the Portuguese Viceroy and subsequently, he fell out of favor with the Portuguese king.
1519
Magellan took his services to the King of Spain, and in 1519 he sailed with an expedition of five ships under the Spanish flag. This is the voyage for which Magellan is well known as this is the expedition that was the first to successfully circumnavigate the globe. Magellan died in the Philippines during the journey and did not, himself, complete the trip.
