Even traditional colleges and universities are now offering online doctorate degrees. As these degrees become more widely accepted, the range of schools and programs on offer has become broader, but they still have not achieved the availability of on-campus programs.
Degree programs
Doctorates with strong practical application, such as education, computer science, and criminal justice are the most widely available. Highly academic PhD programs, such as philosophy and anthropology, are still difficult to find online.
Distance schools
Specialized distance education universities, such as University of Phoenix or Capella, offer PhD programs that are becoming more widely recognized.
Traditional schools
Traditional on-campus schools, such as Indiana State University, have begun to offer entirely distance-based courses and degrees in a very limited number of programs.
Residency
Many U.S.-based PhD programs still have residency requirements, and you must travel to campus at least once during your degree.
International programs
Some overseas universities with strong academic traditions, such as University of South Africa, have distance programs accessible to US students.
