Texas Ware Melmac dishes include a chemical called melamine, which is commonly used in many plastics. However, plates, bowls and other dishes made from melamine are not safe to use in a microwave. Microwaves cause the dishes to crack and chip, which may allow melamine to leak into foods. Since ingestion of melamine can cause numerous health problems, including cancer, using Melmac in a microwave is not safe.

On the Other: Undamaged Plates Are Fine

The danger from melamine in Melmac appears to come mostly from damaged plates. Since Melmac plates are difficult to break under normal conditions, the danger from undamaged dishware is minimal. While the health problems caused by melamine are inarguable, there seems to be no research that proves undamaged Melmac poses a serious health risk.

    Bottom Line

Texas Ware Melmac is definitely unsafe to use in the microwave. It damages the dishes and may lead to melamine leaking into food. While people with children or health problems may want to be better safe than sorry, there is no proof as of 2009 that undamaged Melmac leaches melamine.
