In the United States, acupressure primarily is used as a treatment to minimize stress and to relieve pain. In China, acupressure is advocated for the treatment of minor illnesses such as colds, sore muscles and headaches. The National Institute for Health Research Health Technology Assessment (NIHR HTA) program in the United Kingdom reports testing the use of acupressure wristbands in the management of chemotherapy and as a substitute for antiemetic drugs. Wrist bands already have been proven to be effective in reducing postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) associated with certain surgical procedures such as laparoscopic cholecystectomy. According to the "Science Daily" (February 17, 2006 issue), one study conducted in Taiwan "found acupressure to be more effective in the treatment of lower back pain than physical therapy."

On the Other: Effects of Acupressure Treatment

In Chinese medicine, acupressure involves placing pressure on certain acupoints of the anatomy to release the flow of blocked energy (also known as Qi (chee) along the body's 14 main energy channels or primary meridians. By pressing on certain acupoints, blood flow is accelerated, and the part of the body that is experiencing discomfort or illness starts to heal. Although Western medicine has not been able to establish that any of the aforementioned meridians exist, it has been found that pressing on certain acupoints releases endorphins, which are the body's natural painkillers.

    Bottom Line

Links have been established between acupressure and healing. Scientific investigation continues as to how and where acupressure is most helpful for those individuals who are seeking an alternative cure for illness or pain.
