Mobile phones can help kids stay connected with their parents while providing an opportunity to learn about responsibility. On his website, Dr. Vincent Iannelli, M.D., F.A.A.P notes that cell phones can provide a sense of security, are convenient, can be used as a tool to teach responsibility and cost can be managed easily by parents.

    On the Other: Health Concerns

Many parents and physicians alike are concerned with the potential health risks of extended mobile phone use among children. In a blog post from August 9th, 2008, Newsweek reports, "The American Cancer Society says it does not yet have enough information to issue guidelines on the subject. What researchers do know is that the microwave radiation emitted from cell phones penetrates a child's brain more deeply (younger skulls are thinner and less protective)."

    Bottom Line

While there is no concrete scientific evidence to prove or disprove that mobile phones are a health risk to children, you should decide as a family if your children would benefit from having mobile phones.
