History

Historically, T-shirts have been been associated as undergarments for military men. European soldiers were some of the first people who wore this garment, then American soldiers adopted them to be used with their uniforms. In time, T-shirts have progressed from being undergarments to becoming a staple of clothing within American society.

Function

As an undergarment, T-shirts offer protection for outerwear from body perspiration and odor. T-shirts also offer warmth as an extra layer of clothing in cold weather. During the summer months they help to keep people cool.

Styles

The T-shirt has two basic styles: The standard "T" design and the V-neck design. The V-neck design has this name because the collar is shaped like the letter V. There are also other variations of T-shirts, such as tube tops, tank tops, halter tops and muscle shirts.

Materials

Most T-shirts are made out of cotton and/or polyester. Materials such as knit, wool and even silk are also used to make T-shirts, but on a smaller scale.

Advertisements

Music bands, sports organizations, and groups with political and social causes all have used T-shirts to make money for team promotion and even to proclaim a social or political cause. T-shirts have gained enough prominence within our society that they can be officially worn as an outer garment.
