  • There are three steps to the tumbling process. The amount of grit that is used to shape the rocks depends on the size of the rock tumbler. When using the standard 60/90 coarse grit silicon carbide for the first step or the fine grit 120/220 for the second step, use an estimated 3 tbsp. for a 1.5-lb. barrel, 4 tbsp. for a 3-lb. barrel, 6 tbsp. for a 10-lb. barrel and 20 tbsp. for a 12-lb. barrel. For the third step using the pre-polish 500 grit, use an estimated 4 tbsp. for a 1.5-lb. barrel, 5 tbsp. for the 3-lb. barrel, 12 tbsp. for the 6-lb. barrel, and 24 tbsp. for the 12-lb. barrel.
