Traditionally, a bed is composed of a box spring, mattress and frame that supports the set and elevates it off the ground.
Mattress Support
The typical mattress has wire springs and coils inside. When paired with a sturdy box spring, the otherwise bendable mattress becomes very firm and provides more support for the body.
Definition
A box spring is the box below the mattress that contains coils atop a wooden base to support movement in the mattress above. A box-spring mattress refers to the set consisting of both a box spring and mattress.
Construction
A box spring will usually consist of a wooden frame and coil springs strategically placed to support a matching mattress.
Purpose
A box spring extends the life of your mattress by providing it with the best foundation. Every coil in your mattress absorbs less pressure when supported by a thicker coil in the box spring than it would if placed on a hard floor.
Less Popular
Box-spring mattresses are becoming less popular now due to frame beds and beds that provide slats for sturdier modern mattresses. When a box is needed, an all-wood box is cheaper and often used to elevate the mattress for aesthetic reasons.
