Phlebotomists work with tools and equipment designated for collecting human blood and fluid samples. Since they work so closely with blood, phlebotomists are also required to use personal safety equipment to avoid contracting blood-borne diseases.
Venipuncture Supplies
Venipuncture equipment is used to collect blood samples from a person's vein. This equipment includes a compression bandage, disinfectant, a blood collection needle and holder, tubes, cotton squares, gauze, bandaging materials and a phlebotomy tray.
Fluid Sample Supplies
The equipment used for collecting fluid samples, such as urine, is a collection cup that is provided to the patient.
Personal Safety Equipment
Phlebotomists are required to follow safety practices when handling blood and fluid samples. The equipment that is necessary for personal safety includes vinyl or latex gloves, face masks, head coverings and lab gowns.
Laboratory Furniture
Furniture used by phlebotomists includes chairs with arm rests for patients and examination tables.
Other Equipment
Phlebotomists also use other equipment for more specialized samples, such as collecting blood from an infant. This equipment includes lancets and capillary tubes.
