  • At one point, having a wedding anywhere other than in the town you lived was something only the rich and famous could afford. With travel costs dropping and other countries offering more lucrative offers, destination weddings have suddenly gone from being impossible to afford to very reasonable. According to DestinationWeddings.com, those who have a destination wedding can actually save an average of $20,000 off their wedding bill.

    Having a Destination Wedding

Contact a wedding planner who has experience doing destination weddings. A lot of people can be wedding planners; not many can be destination wedding planners because this requires having contacts in other countries. When interviewing wedding planners, make sure they provide that information. Determine with your fiance where you want to go. Hawaii is a particular favorite, but you can get married in any country you want. The one thing to keep in mind is the cost of flying and housing the guests to the destination. While you are not responsible for paying for them getting to your wedding, if you know your family can't afford a certain place, don't suggest it. One of the most important things to keep in mind is the officiant of the wedding. If you are being married out of the United States, a U.S. official cannot perform the wedding. Because of this, an official from that country must officiate it. Have your wedding planner set up a flying and hotel package deal so that your guests can save money on going to the wedding. Because the planner is going to have more pull with the hotel and airlines, he or she will be able to save far more money than you would be able to if you tried to haggle.
