Preparation H is a hemorrhoid cream that contains phenylephrine, a powerful ingredient that constricts blood vessels. The product heals hemorrhoids by constricting the blood and causing them to shrink--so in theory, Preparation H can do the same for puffy eyes, according to Dr. Jeffrey Benabio, a board-certified dermatologist who practices in San Diego, California. The product works to shrink the blood vessels under your eyes as it squeezes out the excess fluids and reduces puffiness.
Preparation H is not designed for use around the eye area, says Dr. Benabio. If you accidentally get this product in your eyes, it can cause irritation, as opposed to eye creams that are specially formulated for the delicate eye area. Also, if you use Preparation H repeatedly, your blood vessels may actually become more dilated as they try to fight the constricting phenylephrine, adds Dr. Benabio.
Preparation H contains ingredients that will help shrink blood vessels and may reduce the puffiness under your eyes. However, it is not made for the eye area and if used long term can actually cause the blood vessels to dilate, making your puffiness worse. Preparation H can work as a quick fix, but other safer options should be considered for a long-term solution.
