• The Illinois Supreme Court is the highest court in the state of Illinois. The only court in the U.S. that can overrule its rulings is the United States Supreme Court in Washington, D.C.

    There are seven judges who sit on the Illinois Supreme Court. They get seats on the court by winning partisan elections.

    Partisan Elections

    Justices must win their seat on the Illinois Supreme Court by a vote of the people. They are listed on ballots with their name and party affiliation.

    Justice Terms

    Justices serve 10-year terms and then must run for re-election if they wish to continue sitting on the court.

    Fun Facts

    The Illinois Supreme Court disposed an average of 3,000 cases a year between 2003 and 2007.

    In Session

    The Illinois Supreme Court convenes only five times a year. When addressing the court, persons must use the center table or lectern.
