<h4 class="dechead">On One Hand: Holistic Medicine for Dogs Sometimes Works
Holistic or alternative medicine works in similar ways for dogs as it works for humans. Generally, holistic medicine treats the whole body, not just the symptoms. Many people consider holistic medicine a gentler treatment method for their dogs than more mainstream methods. Dogs can have acupuncture, herbal treatments, homeopathy, massage and nutritional supplements.
On the Other: Vets do not Agree with Holistic Methods
There is no scientific proof to back up most holistic medicine. If you are substituting holistic medicine for a condition that requires conventional medicine, you could be harming your dog. Some vets are more open than others are to a holistic approach, so check with your vet first before discounting conventional medicine. Your vet may be able to give you some recommendations.
Bottom Line
For conditions such as pain in older dogs, holistic medicine can work. If you intend to give your dog natural herbs or supplements, make sure you are not giving the wrong dosage. Herbs and supplements may be milder than conventional medicines; however, if given at too high a dosage, you could harm your dog.
