Women get bladder infections much more often than men due to biological differences between a man's urinary tract and a woman's. Although they can be very painful, bladder infections are easily treated.
Bladder Infection vs. UTI
According to the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, a bladder infection is really a specific type of urinary tract infection. The bladder is in the lower urinary tract, while an upper UTI causes a kidney infection.
Causes
Bacteria cause most bladder infections, according to the congress. Bacteria typically enter the urinary tract from the rectum or vagina, or from having sex.
Symptoms
The congress lists common symptoms of a UTI as pain and burning when urinating, a frequent urge to urinate, and cloudy urine with a strong odor.
Treatment
Antibiotics treat UTIs and typically eliminate symptoms in one to two days.
Prevention
The congress recommends drinking plenty of fluids, wiping from front to back after using the bathroom, and emptying your bladder as soon as possible to prevent urinary tract infections.
