Computers were once a luxury used only by rich people. Today, they're a common tool. Students of all ages need to use computers to stay current with technology and remain competitive as they enter the workforce.
Function
Students use computers for several things, including writing papers, researching on the Internet for reports and learning computer programming.
Frequency
The majority of students use computers. By fall 2003, 100% of public school had Internet access and 66% of children 3-17 used a computer at home to complete school assignments, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
Types
Laptops and netbooks with wireless networking are useful for students, particularly college students, because it allows groups to work collaboratively in several locations on and off campus. You can't bring desktops with you, but they're usually cheaper and have more powerful processors than laptops.
Potential
The computer systems design and related services are expected to experience rapid growth in the industry, adding 489,000 jobs between 2006 and 2016, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Warning
Computers should not be a substitute for actual learning. For example, a student should learn how to do math like percentages instead of relying on a percentage conversion program.
