  • Based upon the principal "like cures like," homeopathy theorizes that tiny amounts of a toxic substance can act as an antidote to that substance. Conversely, medications that mitigate symptoms of an illness cause those symptoms in an otherwise healthy individual.

    History

In the early 1800's, German physicist Samuel Hahnemann observed how cinchona bark, a malaria remedy, caused malaria fever in patients who didn't suffer from the disease. Hahnemann tested hundreds of substances on healthy students with similar results.

    Treatment

Today, remedies are chosen from combinations of physical and emotional symptoms. Several remedies are suggested for bruising, for example; closer inspection of the correlating emotional effects highlights the most appropriate remedy.

    Identification

Criteria for choosing remedies include the location, duration, and strength of symptoms. Medical history, factors that aggravate or improve conditions; and time of day are considered as well.

    Dosage

Potency, marked by letter-number combinations, refers to the number of times a particular substance has been diluted. Lower strengths, like 6x, are generally prescribed for acute conditions. Higher potencies, like 200c, are for chronic illnesses.

    Considerations

Consulting a homeopathic physician is beneficial. While selecting the wrong remedy shouldn't cause short-term harm, there is a possibility of developing the symptoms that remedy is meant to treat.
