People use electric generators to provide electricity when no commercial power is available. The three main uses are for camping, construction work and for temporary home use during a commercial power outage.
Camping
Portable electric generators can power lights, entertainment equipment and computers on a camping trip. They can also be used on power RVs and camp trailers, some of which have adapters to connect a generator directly to the vehicle.
Home Backup
A wide variety of generators are available to provide emergency power to homes during power outages. These can range from small portable units only to run lighting for a few hours, up to large units that will power the whole house for several days.
Outdoor Events
A portable electric generator can run entertainment equipment and lights for large outdoor parties. They can be used in large yards or in public parks where no commercial power is available.
Boats
A generator can provide electricity on a pleasure boat that stops for long periods without the motor running. House boats and yachts could have lights, entertainment equipment and computers.
Construction Sites
A generator must be used to run lights and power tools such as saws and drills at construction sites where the commercial power is not yet installed.
