I learned on automatic at first (we only had automatic cars). Then, after having my license for 9 months we got a stick shift and I learned manual. It was an invaluable thing to learn and has come in handy countless times.

Stick shift. My early learning was on an old Farmall tractor. My first official driving lessons were in a 1967 Ford truck with a 3 on the tree.

Drivers' Education was only taught with an automatic transmission. That same year I learned to drive a manual. I loved it, except during rush hour on surface streets!

I started with an automatic, but learned to drive stick later. My first 3 cars were all manual transmission, and I just recently bought my first automatic. My left foot and right arm feel left out now, though.

Manual gears, no powersteering, hard clutch. (Manual = stick shift here)
My parents had this idea that if I oould handle a car like that, I could handle anything. It was a good idea, but once I got into a car with powersteering, I was oversteering.

I first learned from a stick shift and It's good to learn it first and when you've learned how to drive It would be easy to use an automatic than learning the automatic first.
