  • Living among any mountains provides you with some nature's most beautiful scenery. As in planning the design of any house on any type of land, there are a few things to consider when planning a house design in the mountains. There are things you can do to make the design of the house integrate and contrast mountains effectively.

    Mountain Slope

The roof of the house should contour with the slope of the mountains. To blend the house into the mountain scenery, the roof should slope at the same angle as the mountain slopes. This allows the house to blend in and become a part of the natural scenery. Angles should be considered in all areas of the house. All areas of the roof should slope with the angle as the mountain. Staircases should also slope at the same angle.

    Color

The house should be painted a natural color. Bold bright colors would disrupt the overwhelming presence of natural green (yellow, red, and orange in autumn). A subtle gray, off-white, or shade of tan or brown will blend nicely, but still accentuate the house enough so it is not lost in the landscape. Stone accents may be effective in a mountain land setting. Natural wood or a log cabin-style home would work well on mountain land.

    Yard

Trees are essential to making the house blend in with the landscape. Having a few trees close to the house and next to staircases will make the house become part of the scenery. However, you do not want your house to be hidden entirely by trees. The trees should accent angles of the house and allow the house to blend in. Planting a few trees with skinny trunks such as birch or aspen trees next to a staircase or surrounding large window will make your house at home in the mountain land. If your house is smaller, you can plant shorter trees like dogwood or Japanese maple trees. The yard looks best open and unfenced, allowing your house to fit in. However, if you have children or a dog, you will probably want a fenced-in yard. Fences in a mountain, natural land setting would mix nicely if they were a natural wood or stained a natural color. Bold fences, metal fences, or chain-link fences would clash horribly with mountain land setting.
